Do You Mean What You Sing?
Singing is a vital part of our worship assemblies. Singing is an effort to glorify God and teach one another. It is from the heart, and should be done with an understanding of what we are saying and doing. See 1 Corinthians 14.15; Ephesians 5.19; Colossians 3.16.
But are we always sincere? Do we carry out in daily life what we sing in Sunday worship? Consider...
- We sing “Sweet Hour of Prayer” and pray only a few minutes a day.
- We sing “Onward Christian Soldiers” and wait to be drafted.
- We sing “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” and don’t use the one we have to speak for Christ.
- We sing “Blest Be the Tie” and let the slightest offense sever it.
- We sing “I Love to Tell the Story” but rarely mention it to anyone.
- We sing “Serve the Lord With Gladness” but gripe when asked.
- We sing “Cast Thy Burden on the Lord” but worry ourselves sick.
- We sing “The Gospel is for All” and never invite anyone to church.
- We sing “Here Am I! Send Me!” and never volunteer for work.
- We sing “I Surrender All” and give only 3 or 4% of our income.
- We sing “Oft We Come Together” and regularly miss Bible classes and evening services.
- We sing “I’m satisfied with just a cottage below” and are not happy with our homes.
- We sing “Hardly a comfort can afford” while our homes are full of un- used conveniences.
Now, once again: Do you really mean what you sing?
