I Pledge Allegiance to Jesus Christ
Happy 4th of July to my fellow Americans.
On this our Independence Day I want to remind us of something very important. Christianity isn’t American. America isn’t Christian. And faith and patriotism are not interwoven.
I am deeply afraid we have allowed the traditions and values of our founding fathers to speak louder than the ways of our Heavenly Father.
We must acknowledge that the Constitution isn’t on par with the Bible. Capitalism isn’t equal with the free gift of salvation. Righteousness and Republican are not synonymous terms.
The battlefield that we are called to fight on isn’t in Iraq or Afghanistan. And, contrary to popular belief, Jesus didn’t write the 2nd Amendment.
Today, even as we celebrate our country, we must remember that Jesus said, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight... But my Kingdom is not of this world” (John 18.36).
Our nation isn’t contained in the borders of the United States. Our citizenship exceeds this country. Our kingdom is the Kingdom of Heaven. Our Kingdom is purchased and governed by a blood-born Savior. And as a disciple of that man, Jesus, I pledge my allegiance to him on this 4th of July.
“I pledge allegiance to Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Man, And to his church for which it stands, One body under God, indivisible, with salvation and mercy for all.”
