God's Promises and Customer Service

“Under-promise; over-deliver.” That phrase is an excellent piece of advice in terms of customer service. You have likely had a waiter who comes to the table and says, “Your food will be right out.” And then he comes back later to promise the same thing 2-3 more times. It’s easy to grow weary of such promises when they have not been fulfilled as promised. The better route is to go above and beyond in the fulfillment of all promises made to the customer. An unfulfilled promise leaves us disappointed and distrusting.

God has made some promises which would seem—let’s just be honest— totally impossible to keep. He promised a child would be born to a virgin (Isa. 7:14). He promised that a man would be born who would destroy the devil and death (Gen. 3:15). He promised that his Messiah would heal those born blind and the deaf (Isa. 35:5-6). He even promised that his Messiah would not be abandoned to the grave, but that he would rise again (Psa. 16:10-11). These promises are not to be taken lightly. They would all seem to be delusional promises on which no one can deliver. Certainly, no man could make such commitments and actually keep them. This would seem to be another case of over-promising and under-delivering.

And yet, God delivers on every single one of his promises. In spite of all of them being written 400-1000 years before the time of the Christ, each is fulfilled in splendid detail in the life of a Galilean carpenter named Jesus.

And this gives us all the more reason to trust in the promises of God for our lives. When he promises freedom from sin... he can deliver on that. When he promises eternal life in his presence... he can deliver on that. When he promises peace that passes understanding... he can deliver on that. When he promises that he will never leave us nor forsake us... he can deliver on that.

God doesn’t under-promise. But he ALWAYS delivers on his word.
