Change Without - Peace Within
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; (Psalm 46:1-2)
One of the hallmarks of trust is the ability to peacefully accept change. A child can accept change as long as her mother’s arms are tight around her, and her father stands near. This innate trust in the safety net of the parents makes them resilient to change and capable of adapting to it.
Psalm 46 reminds us that we are children of God, and He is our safety net. We must be prepared to adapt to change in a world that is constantly changing, and sometimes, changing in ways that make us feel like even the mountains have become movable.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy dwelling places of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she will not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. (Psalm 46:4-5)
Earthly change is inevitable. Our age brings health changes, time brings job changes, our children grow up, old friends grow distant, new friends draw closer, and loved ones perish before us. The turbulent sea of life is part of the journey of being human… but for the Christian, there is an immovable rock – God and His love. We are told that if we keep His Word, both the Father and the Son will dwell with us (see John 14:23). When we have the immovable God with us at all times, we need not worry about the changes of this earth. Since He cannot be moved, when He abides with us, we cannot be moved either.
This week, try and dwell on the immovable God who loves you and not the ever-changing world that swirls around you. Just by changing our perspective, we can have more joy, complain less, find hope through disappointments, adapt to change by looking forward instead of back, let our lights shine in a world that doesn’t have our hope, and be an example to our loved ones… just to name a few!
God is good… all the time.
Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10)
