*Just* Words

“Since we have heard that some of our number to whom we gave no instruction have disturbed you with their words, unsettling your souls…” (Acts 15:24)

Words can be unsettling.  Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can touch your soul.  It was *just* words which the devil used to unsettle souls in the early church.  It is *just* words which can destroy the church now.

The words we say to each other – do they build up, or do they tear down?

The words we listen to – do they cause us to dwell on good and pure things, or do they stir our hearts up to anger, dismay, or deception?

The words we use and the words we hear have a profound impact upon us.  Choose them carefully.

Questions to ask:

1. How does this show the continuation of Jesus’ work now going on in the church?
2. How is the gospel, Paul’s preaching, and/or Paul’s defense received?
3. What is the Holy Spirit doing in this text?
4. What in our reading shows how Paul handled adversity and difficulty?
