We All Need a Sherpa
“For such is God, our God forever and ever; He will guide us until death.” (Psalm 48:14)
When Sir Edmund Hillary scaled Mount Everest, he received the fanfare, but Tenzing Norgay, the Sherpa was his guide every step of the way. Hillary was wise enough to enlist the help of a guide that knew the way and was familiar with the terrain, and it was a pivotal aspect of his successful ascent.
We all must live and wend our way through this life into the unknown of death, but we do not need to do it without a guide. Our God has blessed us with His wisdom to help us calculate each move along the journey and help us to make decisions as we navigate the rocky terrain of joys and sorrows, prosperity and poverty. The twists and turns our lives will take are guaranteed – so much so that we say things like “the only thing that stays the same is change”. Does it not make sense to enlist the Guide when He is offering us His help so readily?
Jesus is the Way. He is the guide for both life and death. There is no shame in leaning on His understanding when both life and death are full of so many unknowns.
