Bible Bites
No Joy in Suffering
“He who mocks the poor taunts his Maker; he who rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished.” (Proverbs 17:5)
Bad things happen to people. Sometimes those bad things are their fault; sometimes, they aren’t. Either way, there is no joy to be found in the suffering of your fellow man. There should be no rejoicing in our hearts when our fellow man falls. To mock a man when he is down is both malicious and irreverent says Proverbs 17:5.
To rejoice over another’s demise is to find joy in the suffering of one born in His image, and by extension, to taunt the Maker of us all. Compassion and empathy leave no room for malicious laughter.
