A Contrite Heart
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.” (Psalm 51:17)
Jehovah is clear on what sin is and how much He despises it. Despising sin is not the same as despising sinners though. God loves sinners – enough to send His Son for them.
The honesty to admit our need for help is all He is waiting for. The man who will seek Him faithfully and humbly will not be disappointed. His Word leads us to faith (Romans 10:17), and baptism leads us to forgiveness (Mark 16:16).
Humility brings us to the Son who saves through the water and the Word.
“Jesus answered him, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’ Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?’ Jesus answered, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’ ” (John 3:3-5)
